PBR from Kansas City to the Sunshine State

Hopefully, last weekend you cowboys and cowgirls were able to follow the PBR as it returned to Kansas City. Lots of great riders were in tow for this one! Not only did you have the world No. 1, Valdiron de Oliveira, but also Ben Jones and Shane Proctor. These two are having the best years of their careers, so everyone was excited to see them continue their dominance.  Plenty of other big names in the PBR were there too, like the reigning champ, Renlato Nunes.

The first night was called PBR Night and not only did they have the show, but they mixed in some Opening Day goodness as well. Now, as a bull, I can get into some rodeo. Baseball is another issue though. I’m not sure what the draw is there. I mean, I could chew on that ball; they are kind of tasty. Of course, they ain’t no dandelion!

Anyways, congratulations to Caleb Sanderson, for winning his first ever Built Ford Touch Shootout! The kid was on fire, handling bulls like he grew up breeding them. No way I’d ever let anyone dominate me like that (don’t tell my handler I said that). Those bulls he rode looked a bit slow and tame or maybe he was just that good. We’ll see this weekend down in Tampa Bay, Florida, where he and the biggest, baddest stars of PBR will convene for the Built Ford Tough Invitational. All of the thrills and spills will take place starting at 7:50 p.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Each of the 40 riders will ride on both days. After that, it’s the usual top 10 scores that advance.

Get out your 10-gallon hats and get on down to the show if you can. A little birdy told me the bulls are going to be in worked up and in rare form for this one. It should be more exciting than calf’s fighting over their mothers milk.

Spotlight on Professional Bulls, past and present

The heroes and champions that make PBR what it is are definitely the bulls! All you cowboys know that without us, you don’t even have a sport. It’s about time someone put the spotlight where it belongs.

Past Bulls in PBR

There is a strong line of bulls that paved the way to the current stock that entertains us in the PBR and other bull riding events. One of the older breeders of bucking bulls for events is the Rice Ranch. You can see, from their bucking bulls website, just how long they have been breeding champion bulls and just how many of them have been featured in events for PBR and such.

Current Bulls in PBR

As you can imagine, there are a lot of active bulls in PBR, since there are also a lot of events. If the same few bulls were used over and over again, they wouldn’t be so wild each time a cowboy was strapped to their back. No, there is a nice long list of active bulls to keep the cowboys and cowgirls riding them, and the audience watching them, knee deep in bull dung forever. If you’re a bit curious check out the stats on active bulls right now. They keep a great record of how the bull has done. Matter of fact, they have every little bit of information except a picture of the bull. What, riders can get pictures in their profiles, but none for the bulls? That’s discrimination and I hope somebody gets skewered for it.

Oh, and one more thing…

Have you ever named your own bull?

Well, have you? Over at RANK, they are having a “Name your bull” contest. Apparently, they have done this before and everyone loved it. It’s something most people never get to do, unless you’re a breeder. If you’d like to try your hand at it, visit the post and leave the name you choose in a comment below.

PS – The name Seymour is taken.

Bucking Bulls

Watch this video with some of the best bucking bulls that have ever been rode.

You’ll notice those riders didn’t stay on the backs of those bulls long at all. If you like bull riding and rodeos, and haven’t seen this kind of action yet, make note. Bucking Bulls is an actual event. Separate from bull riding pro events, it’s a collection of the hardest, trouble-maker, bucking bulls they could get. They take them and strap on the brave cowboys willing to take their shot at fame.

On the other end, we all get to watch the whole scene unravel. This is where bull riding and NASCAR share an aspect: everyone watches for the big accident. Every now and then I’ll take not of the crowd at an event like this and nothing excites them more than watching someone get mauled after falling off the back of one of those bulls. You would think there would be some show for concern first. I mean, the bull could have injured himself skewering that cowboy. Where are the safety measures? When you are kicking that hard with your hind legs, it’s real easy to roll an ankle on the landing. And do you know what a pain it is to re-sharpen horns after using them? I don’t think anyone appreciates the job the bulls do to bring you all this kind of entertainment. So here are some videos with great Bucking Bulls. Next time you see a rodeo and a cowboy making it look easy, just remember: It takes some real bulls balls to get up on a bucking bull.

It takes even bigger balls to be a bucking bull, which is why to end this post, I am giving a shout out to Big Tex! He is one mean bucking machine!

Bull Proof

There are those that just have toughness built-in. Renato Nunes is one of those people. He is back and riding bulls well as ever. The reigning World Champion missed seven Built Ford Tough Series events after breaking a bone in the small finger of his riding hand at a Touring Pro event a night after the first BFTS event of 2011 in New York.

That might seem like a small injury, but imagine you ride bulls for a living. Now, you can only use one hand, so imagine the small finger on that hand is broken. Do you know how bad it must hurt to try hanging on to two tons of bucking muscle with a broken finger?

After having the finger surgically repaired, Nunes came back out in fine form last Friday with an 87-point effort on Spike (that’s the bull he rode).  Guess a little pain isn’t keeping that boy from protecting his title.

See, that’s why I sit back and watch. There’s a lot in the world I still want to explore, but if I can avoid busting myself up and breaking bones, I think I will. This bull ain’t getting any younger.

The part that gets me is the surgically repairing the finger. I mean, it didn’t hurt enough to break it in the first place? It could not have felt great having a small crew holding the bone in place for almost two months. Nunes told reporters that the finger still hurts too. That makes it even more surprising he did so well. Bull riding isn’t a sport where you can leave and come back after a while and expect to do great. It’s not like getting back on the bike. To stay at your prime, it takes constant practice and competition. That’s why Nunes gets the title ‘Bull Proof’, because there are some things a man is just made for. His is riding bulls. Ride’em cowboy.

Bike Week in Daytona this Weekend!

Oh man! Bike week down in Daytona is just about here! If you’ve been to it before, you know how crazy it will be for all the festivals. To give all the newcomers an idea of what to expect, let me give a quick rundown on:

Bike week in Daytona is several different events happening during the same week in Daytona. You have the Daytona 200, which has an incredible line-up of things to do, and the Motorcycle rally and event. Ride down and see a Supercross event on the Daytona International Speedway. If you stay there for the entire 10-day period, you can check out the XDL Championship series and a Fan Walk for AMA Pro Racing. I hear that watching the bikini contest is a nice change of pace in between the bike races.

It’s past time to get the maintenance done on your bike and gather your friends for this trip. Hopefully, you’ve got the next 10 days clear, starting with this weekend. It’s going to feature some of the hottest bike races, historic bikes, parties, beach events and bike showings. Let Bruce Rossmeyers Harley Davidson at Destination Daytona and New Smyrna Harley Davidson play host to you and 500,000 other bikers for two weeks.

Basically, this is the annual kick-off for the east coast riding season. For this bull, the big attraction is all the new bike models on display. There will be a huge showcase of motorcycle manufacturers, from Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Victory, Triumph, and Ducatti. Seems a waste to go there and not take a demo-ride on one of those brand new motorcycles.

Make some plans, make the trip and do me one more favor: get a picture of yourself on one of the new bikes and send it to me! I’ll be blogging about the new models and other events after Bike Week is over. If you can get me those pictures, I’ll put them up to show everyone how good a time you had.

The 2011 CBR Casa Ford Tuff Hedeman West Texas Shootout

Quick recap on the event results:

Craig Jackson pulled out the win with two 90-point rides (How they score it: bull riding basics). He won the CINCH CBR tour event, picked up  a winner’s check and a few other goodies. Plus, he is now a contender for this year’s $10,000 Mahindra Tractors CBR Texas Swing.

There is a new number one in the CINCH CBR World Standings and it’s the veteran Bonner Bolton. With consistent performances so far, he is 3-of-4 so far at CINCH CBR Tour events. He’ll be a major factor in the World Title race.

J.W. Harris deserves a special mention, as he is on top of his game this year. The man’s low score remains an 88-point ride. Now that is making it look easy.

I also want to recognize the real stars of the event, the bulls! The best bulls from this past event definitely deserve special mention. Three of them were marked 45.5 points: Chocolate Joey, Daddy’s Boy, and Tap Out. These boys don’t get enough recognition for making the entire show worthwhile. People may come for the bull riders, but the bull riders come for the bulls.

It’s a great sport to watch, but you’ll never catch me out there. Anyone tries to hop up and ride me and- well, read the t-shirt.

Valentine’s Day has come and gone

It’s always kind of a tricky day for me. Most of the breeding cows know me pretty well… cough. See, all my sons and daughters weren’t exactly from the same mother. That’s just not how bulls get it done. As you can imagine, getting gifts for all the ladies that have given their hearts to me could get a bit pricey. Isn’t it crazy what you have to pay for some flowers these days?

Of course, that does bring up an interesting question: Do biker chics like flowers? I mean, I’d heard that every woman likes flowers, but that might not be true. I saw a lady on this ranch go cuckoo over a new truck. I kind of figure the kind of lady who likes to take long rides would want something for her bike or to make her look even better on it.

As Fred and I had a chance to hit a couple events this past 2010, we talked to quite a few couples. Someone of them just wanted to say they loved the t-shirt, others just wanted to pet me for luck (Must have me confused with a statue of Buddha). Anyways, to celebrate the day of love, we picked the best picture to put up. With those hats, they must be in love.

Biketoberfest and Bike week in Daytona!

Last year, I made it down to Daytona, Florida for Biketoberfest and Bike week. Both of them were some kind of party.

The event brings in all types for a rowdy, rocking time. You got your tourists, at the event for the first time just trying to see what it’s all about. Then there are your exhibitionists, the ones that dress up in costume (Biketoberfest is right around Halloween after all) and walk around all day impressing people. There are the veteran bikers that include the events as part of a long road trip to close out the fall riding season. Hell, you even get the new bikers, out for their first or second long ride and just looking to meet up with other riders for life.

No matter what group you fit in, there is something for you at these gatherings. There are new bikes to ogle, pictures to take, parties, contests, concerts and more. Oh, and did I mention the food? It was to die for, quite literally for a few cows.
Me, Fred and the crew were there last year and are looking forward to the trip this year. Come by the booth and say ‘Hi’. We promise it won’t take us nearly as long to get pcitures up come this next time around.

The Craziest Thing I Ever Did See

Bull riding is not for the weak willed and soft-handed. It is by far, the craziest things you Cowboys do. Maybe that fact makes the stalwart fellows and ladies that have become professionals in the sport so proud. It takes a certain kind of crazy to go messing with a bull. There is no half-hearted approach there, come sure cocked or not at all. I’m not sure what everyone else does as a daily activity, but I bet it doesn’t include straddling 2 tons of raging attitude.

Imagine taking a pissed off bull for a ride just for the heck of it? I can’t speak for every bull, but you do not want to piss off a Brahman bull. What type of person carves out a career path that involves hanging onto a bull for dear life? That is the real question. I mean, it takes some real bulls balls to be in one of those rodeos. Not all of us kick around and do all that dancing when we’re mad. Take me for instance, I’d prefer to plant myself somewhere I know you don’t want me and refuse to move. Depending on how bad a mood I’m in, it might not be just a warm wet surprise I leave. Get me ticked and I’ll pick your favorite bike, car, shed or worse; I’ll turn it into beat up, useless junk. They don’t call ‘em WMDs for nothing. I will use them when I need them.

I wonder if it’s as big a competition between the bulls or if they’re just angry all the time. Young bulls can get like that sometimes, just angry about this that and everything. Usually, they tend to grow out of it, but not all the time. Then again, maybe those rodeo bulls are just as into the sport as the riders. I guess we’re all just wired together differently.

I give it up to these cowboys and cowgirls. They are brave ones.

Bulls Don’t Do Snow

I don’t have a problem with the changes in weather or rolling along with the natural order of things. Snow isn’t the most pleasant weather, but it’s good for some things. Seems like all the people around me are running around half-cocked worrying about how bad the snowfall is getting. I don’t know why they are so worried about it, since they get to stay inside for it if they want. I look at this way, it’s cool, tasty and makes for a lot of salt to get thrown around. I have yet to meet the bull who wasn’t interested in some free salt lick. That being said, I do have two problems with snowfall: my balls get cold and I don’t take kindly to snow balls being thrown at me.

Some kid thought he’d have a good time throwing snowballs at us Brahman bulls on the ranch. He even had the nerve to hit me with one, while wearing one of my t-shirts! Talk about the bulls balls on that boy. I gave him a few stern looks and then moved away from the fence.  Turns out, he didn’t have much of an arm. If I ever get a birthday invitation from him, I am definitely eating all his cake.

The snow is good for a few things though. I mean, I like eating or licking it. It’s pretty tasty. Also, the snow is pretty fun to lay in and make bull angels. It’s harder for bulls to do it than you people. I have to turn onto each side to get the wing effect. The most fun trick though, is making it yellow. It gets all steamy and warm for a few seconds underneath me and it helps mark what spots are mine. For those of you who don’t know, take a page from thsi t-shirt and I wouldn’t recommend eating any yellow snow. It could turn into an unpleasant surprise.

Did I mention how cold my balls get? When you have bulls balls as big and low hanging as mine, they tend to come into contact with snow and water when I stand in them. Let me tell you, there is nothing like having frozen balls. It takes a bit of time in the shelter to thaw out. Again, I don’t have a problem with the snow. I’m not some whining daisy that can’t endure a bit of cold, but I could do without it.

Give me warm, breezy weather any day.
