That’s No Bull

Cattle ranchers, breeders and the like make up a pretty small industry. Everybody knows everybody else. So it’s no surprise that news about the true worth of a Brahman Bull stud got around quickly.

Let me ask my readers something: How much do you think a breeder would ever pay for a stud bull?

Remember now, the stud bull is what you build a breeding system around. He is your pot of gold. A stud needs to be strong with great bone structure, come from a near flawless genetic line and have the qualities a breeder is looking to cultivate in their herd. Choosing the right stud can make or break your breeding program.

Keeping that in mind, how much do you think a breeder would pay for a stud bull now?

The answer is anywhere from $12,000 to $50,000. That range is what makes this next bit of news so amazing.

Now, I’m pretty new to the whole numbers and money and it’s worth thing. But through talk around town, I heard that two Brahman Bull studs went for $165,000 and $150,000!!

HOLY COW! I mean, I know Brahmans are the best bulls in the world and a good Brahman stud is almost priceless. However, I did not know that ‘priceless’ could be so expensive!

I guess that breeder really knows an excellent specimen when he sees one.

On another note…

Some new videos have been uploaded, including a montage of highlights from this year. More will be uploaded throughout the week and weekend. Remember to check out my gallery! If you saw me at an event and we took a picture, you can probably find it in there. Show it to your friends and let them know you weren’t afraid to go face-to-face with a bull.

The Brahman Bull Heritage … in Hawaii?!

"The Hawaiians"

(via PBRnow.com)

I thought going to Daytona for Bike Week was an awesome trip. Too bad I didn’t get an invitation to head to Hawaii with Mckennon Wimberly and Sean Willingham last week. The two professional bull riders went down to Paniolo to conduct a bull riding clinic (Paniolo means cowboy in Hawaiian). Little did they know that their trip would be the catalyst for a heated discussion between me, Fred and the fella who owns the ranch where I live. I want to know why I haven’t been to Hawaii!

Apparently, everyone but me knew that Hawaii has a rich cowboy heritage. The first bulls arrived in 1793, as a gift to the current king. What I want to know is: how did they get those bulls over there?! It’s hard enough to get me to go anywhere, especially inside a building – it’s always so small inside and it smells weird. A boat is out of the question.

What’s even cooler is that the really great bucking bulls that were and are known in Hawaii are treated like super studs! Kids call their name in the streets and people come to have their pictures taken with them. Enough to make a stud feel like a king.

So how are you going to get me to Hawaii Fred? I need to go, uh, research my Brahman heritage there.

Yea, that’s it.

It’s not about the great weather, fields of dandelions (yes, I heard they had FIELDS of them!) or being treated like a celebrity by the locals. Okay, it’s mostly about that. But don’t forget that “The Hawaiians”, as they are referred to in PBR events, are closely related to Brahman bulls. That fact probably has a lot to do with their popularity and talent. Brahmans have always been the superior bull. But enough about what everyone already knows…

You can find out more about these unique bucking bulls on the PBRnow website.

In the meantime, if you would like to show support for my trip to Hawaii, post a comment here, my facebook page or via twitter that says: “Seymour bulls in Hawaii!”

Together, we can get me the trip I deserve.

Not a Brahman, but still a Stud

Today’s entry is in honor of a bull that is almost worthy of being Brahman: Voodoo Child.

This past Saturday, the bull bucked his last cowboy in the RMEF Big Bull Touring Pro event in Asheville, N.C. He chucked a relative unknown, Cody Brewer, from his back and got a score of 45 points. Now that’s the way to exit the stage, with a top score!

The son of a very well-known PBR bull, Houdini, Voodoo has had a great career. If you check up on him at Probullstats.com, you’ll see he’s only been ridden all the way five times in his entire career! Voodoo has a 92 percent buck-off rate.

What’s that mean? Well, in a nutshell, it means getting on that bulls back was and still is an almost death sentence. Only a proud, stalwart bull can maintain that kind of aggression over the years. Born on May 1, 2002, this 9 year old vet of the professional bull riding world is finally being given his due.  That’s right, time for this bull to become a stud.

Now, I’m sure most of you just assumed that bulls that were done working on the ranch are automatically put out to stud. Nothing could be farther from the truth. A bull must EARN the right to be a stud. Not every two-bit mammal with horns gets to plant his seed. The ranchers want the best and only the best. Second best does not get to become a stud. And third best? Well, they go off with the old horses to that big glue factory in the sky.

Someday, maybe I’ll share with you the deeds that earned me the title of Stud. Suffice to say, it’s the pinnacle of a bulls career and life for that matter. Once named an official stud, Voodoo will get to sit back, give orders, get pampered (the morning massage is the best) and sire some little bulls and cows.

As is tradition, I sent him a message welcoming him into the fold. It’s not every day a new stud is chosen:

To Voodoo:

Welcome to the world of a stud. All of us established studs are honored to have you among us. Having said that, let me say this: Don’t come to my ranch, because everything there is mine. Don’t come to any neighboring ranches cuz that’s mine too. If I see you near my ranch, I’m putting my horns down, and if you eat any of my dandelions, its lights out.

Other than that, we should get along fine! Enjoy being a stud; it’s definitely going to be the best thing that’s happened to you.

Yours Truly,

Seymour

Cowboy is a Way of Life

When it comes to living a life of freedom and responsibility, with a bit of hard character and fierce pride, it turns out bulls, horses and cowboys have a lot in common. When your life revolves around an honest days work, taking care of your animals, providing for your loved ones and enjoying the freedom to ride on toward the horizon – well, I’m pretty sure that’s what being a cowboy is all about.

I was reminded of this when, by chance, I heard something that I couldn’t believe. Let me fill you in:

I was on the road. Sometimes, I get to travel. I rarely get a say as to where I’m going. My handler or Fred will lure me into this metal box on wheels with fresh dandelions. Of course, I could be stubborn (and sometimes I am) and not go, but I think we all know I’d do just about anything for some dandelions.

Anyway…

I was traveling last week to another ranch to ‘do my thing’. If you don’t know, I’m a stud. Best known stud round my parts and probably yours too! I doubt there’s a Brahman Bull that isn’t of my seed for miles around.

What was I talking about again? Oh, right.

So, I was traveling along with my handler this particular time. We made a stop for some gas (which smells terrible by the way) and I overheard a few folks talking. They were talking about how the way of the cowboy was dying out. Now, my ears perked right up on that notion. It amazes me what you 2-legs blurt out sometimes. How could anyone think such a thing?

Being a cowboy is a proud tradition. It isn’t all about riding horses and bucking bulls. Working a ranch or being a handler doesn’t quite describe it either. It’s a feeling in your gut and a way you choose to look at life. I guess not everyone sees the real way of life a cowboy lives. Remember when they were all buckaroos?

There are a lot of things I come across in this world that I don‘t respect, make fun of or just plain ol don’t give a hoot about. This isn’t one of them. Let me say it plain and clear: the way of the cowboy will never die out. Not as long as people hold dear the ideas of freedom, respect, responsibility and honor.

Getting up in the morning with the sun and living with the land, making it work for you as you spend your days rustling, hogtying and herding. A cowboy treats the animals he handles with respect, knowing they are what help him through to tomorrow.

A cowboy listens to his instincts, explores and cherishes the freedom that is his birthright and has a strong sense of what’s right. You can’t take something like that away and neither can it die out. It’s just a way of life that will continue as long as there are horses, bulls, ranches and the like in this world.

Now, I believe four legs are better than two and that a set of horns beats a set of hands any day. But that don’t diminish my respect for real cowboys. I wouldn’t let any other type be my handler.

Maybe I got a little carried away here, reacting to that random comment on the road, but sometimes you two legs think too much and just need to be told.

Long live the cowboy and his way of life.

Now get me my afternoon feed.

PS -We’ll miss you James Arness.

One Bull to Buck them All!

What a show we had this past weekend! The #1 stock bull, Bushwacker, does it again! Plus, we got to see the best ride this season! Let’s get right to it:

BFTS champion at PuebloCongratulations Robson Palermo for winning the BFTS event in Pueblo, Colorado this past Saturday. This win moves him from 5th up to 3rd, in the overall standings for this season. It may not seem like much, but when you are talking about upward movement among the top 10 places, bumping up 2 slots is huge!

One thing I continue to be impressed with about the BFTS is the grand finishes for its champions. Not yet has an event disappointed. This past weekend’s event was no different. Palermo was the only cowboy to cover all four bulls he rode in this event. Now, I don’t know if that’s a boon for the stock bulls or if the cowboys simply took a lashing this time around.

(In my professional and unbiased opinion, it was all the bulls. Did you see how high they were bucking?!)

Time to switch the spotlight onto the headliner of the night: Bushwacker, the one bull to buck them all! If you don’t know, it’s well past time you asked somebody (or some-bull; ahem). The leading stock bull, with a high score of 47 points at the U.S. Air Force Invitational, Bushwacker remains perfect for this year’s BFTS.  Thiago Paquioto covered him for 89.75 points in the third round of the 2009 PBR World Finals. Since then, no cowboy has had a chance! Bushwacker has been kicking high and bucking like a tornado. This bull is a force of nature. His career buckoff-time average is 2.83 seconds, compared to 2.65 seconds in 2011. Dustin Elliot gets the bronze balls award for giving him a shot in the Pueblo event and almost riding the full 8 seconds. Your heart was in it, but Bushwacker eats heart felt efforts for breakfast.

On a final note:

Even though I love watching you cowboys take a beating at the hands of bulls, I don’t wish you any harm. To those riders in this seasons BFTS that are nursing injuries: take this time to heal up. We expect to see you back in action come the end of this break, at The WinStar World Casino Invitational!

Check out Palermo’s top score ride!

PBR Stock Report: He’s a Gangster!

It’s time to give the bulls their due. Duluth was the 18th stop in this seasons BFTS and so far, the bulls have done their job. Each one of the stops this season looks to have been more a challenge than the last for the riders. A couple of these bulls are really standing out in competition and are definitely contenders for Champion Bull this season.

Let’s face it; if the bulls weren’t big, muscled and mean, then there wouldn’t be much of a show! One of the biggest and meanest all season has been I’m a Gangster, a definite contender for Champion Bull. Gangster has been on ice for a while now, since 2008 actually. He was brought into this season ready and raring to buck.

Tailgating Madness and the Cincinnati Cowboy

By far, the sport that has the best tailgating is NASCAR. The NFL is a close second, but can’t quite match the crazy extremes that NASCAR fans will go to.

By chance, if you are a new born babe to the world of tailgating, I’ll give it a quick once over. Normally, tailgating is basically just throwing a party in the parking lot of a major event, usually a sporting event or concert. Of course, almost every professional sport has a tailgate of some kind. Even PBR events have plenty of fans that get there early to setup their tailgate.

Now, tailgating has become so popular and expected at events, that the sports themselves encourage official tailgating events. The game now is to one-up every other sport with new, crazy stunts and ideas for tailgating.

This brings us to the heart of the matter: the Ultimate Tailgating Vehicle. Since NASCAR is just one giant tailgate, for the entire length of the race (which is why it’s so much fun!), it’s only fitting they be the ones to finally come out with the top of the line vehicle that encompasses all tailgating needs. Check out the Ultimate Tailgating Vehicle over at the NASCAR website. (More like the Ultimate Road trip Vehicle. Attach my trailer to the end of that puppy and let’s hit the road!)

Definitely enter their contest, but before you do: in the comments section, tell me what your UTV would be like. Me, I’d have a push-button dandelion feeder right next to the bed.

PBR Interlude!

You can’t even talk about this past weekend unless you mention two things:

  1. Chad Ochocinco riding Deja Blu at Duluth this past Saturday.
  2. And Chad Ochocinco riding Deja Blu at Duluth this past Saturday!

I’ve heard of cross-sport athletes before. Bo Jackson and Deon Sanders are two of the most famous. But I don’t think any athlete has ever tried out bull riding on a whim! Chad got up on Deja Blu, after a 2-day crash course in bull riding by none other than the master himself: Ty Murray.

Let me just re-affirm to you all that professional bull riders are crazy. They are so brave, bold and courageous that someone ought to double check their brains for any sense. There is NO SPORT so dangerous and death defying as bull riding. A complete amateur getting on a professional rodeo bull and attempting to ride it is just plain ludicrous.

For that, Chad Ochocinco, you get my Bulls Balls award. Not just anyone would go through with that challenge. You’ve got some large, solid brass ones sir.

Everyone will surely remember stop #18 on this 2011 Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series.

Bull Running or Bull Riding?

I think we all know how I feel about bull riding: it ain’t no sport for gutless wonders. The same goes for any celebration Cinco De Mayo Seymoudabull Stylethat involves running with bulls too! It turns out Pamplona, Spain does not have a monopoly on their signature celebration. During Cinco de Mayo, there are a surprising amount of places in the U.S that have a slightly safer version (if there is such a thing): Austin, Texas and Scottsdale, Arizona to name a few.  It might even be crazier than bull riding.

For those that don’t know, Cinco de Mayo marks an outnumbered Mexican army’s victory over an invading French army on May 5, 1862, in Puebla, east of Mexico City.

Now, repulsing a foreign army on your soil is definitely reason to celebrate. So, the partying part I get. The food part I get. The running with the bulls part, not so much. All I know you couldn’t bribe me with all the dandelions in the world to run down some narrow street for no apparent reason. Not in this heat!

One of my sons is actually in Pamplona and enjoys the event every year. You think people are fond of souvenirs? Ha! He sends me new ones each year, after the event. In the barn, I’ve got them pinned up on a wall. A shoe here, some hair there, a shirt with hoof prints all down it; what can I say, he loves his work.

On a side note:

Renato Nunes is a might humbler these days following the Seattle Invitational. What can we say but that sometimes a doctor’s warning should be heeded. Rest up and get back in the saddle soon Nunes!

Congratulations to L.J. Jenkins, who won the whole thing. Unfortunately, that’s not the highlight. The real action took place when Ben Jones took a shot from the bull he rode, Countdown.

That’s got to hurt the pride! (That is what you call your rear area, right?)

Side-trip: Bike show in Maryland!

Last week, I heard about a bike show and chili-cook off happening in Maryland. Fred has a few friends up north, near there, so I asked him if he could send someone over to check out the bikes for me.

As you all know (or at least you will now!), I am looking for a motorcycle that I will fit me! I am what some might call a ‘wide-load’, so it’s not an easy task.

Anyways, our Friend Joe was down in Elkridge, MD at Daniels Restaurant and Open Air Bars for us and saw some great bikes there. One in particular caught my eye: a 3-wheeler! Check it out below.

See, I have people out scouting for me. What can I say? I have connections. That’s just how us Brahman bulls get it done.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Didn’t Seymour mention Bike show and chili cook-off?!

I sure did, but we don’t have any pictures of the chili or which contestant won. By way of explanation, I have quoted our fearless reporters words below:

“There was a beer special along with the chili cook-off. I started that before I started tasting the chili. I don’t remember much after the 3rd batch I tasted. Luckily, I took pictures of the 3-wheeler earlier!

P.S – They wouldn’t let me ride the 3-wheeler.”

Thanks Joe. Next time though: bikes, food and then beer!

Catch me at some upcoming PBR and rodeo events! Next week I’ll post where you can find me!

PBR on PPV for ‘Last Cowboy Standing’

Last Saturday’s ‘Last Cowboy Standing’ event was awesome! Lots of falls, some good rides, plenty of excitement and even a little bit of drama. All-in-all, it was just what the fans had hoped for.

This is not your average bull riding event. With a $200,000.00 prize on the line, 40 cowboys saddled up on the roughest, toughest, high-kicking bulls PBR ever did bring into the competition. Held in Vegas, it was almost a sell-out crowd.

In the midst of all the craziness, cameras and bulls was the bright smile of Lucas Snyder.

Saturday night he said, “It totally felt like Vegas in ’01. I totally got in a zone, and it’s a point where you don’t have to think about it. You just slide up and you just let reactions take over.”

Snyder, who won the 2001 PBR  World Finals at the ripe age of 19, was back in action for another career win in Vegas. Coming down to his last ride, as the last rider of the night, he pulled off one more qualifying ride to take the win. He took on the bull Wild & Out as his last ride, which you can see here.

That bull gave it a good show, but Snyder was solid the whole 8 seconds. When you are in the zone, you are in the zone.

You can check out the current standings for the 2011 PBR Built Ford Tough Series  Season if you’d like to see where your favorite rider stands. Just scroll to the bottom of the article and you will find it.

On a bittersweet note…

We should all give a sincere acknowledgement of effort towards Sean Willingham, who most likely was robbed of victory due to a questionable call by the judges.

Bulls of note…

Which were the fiercest bulls of the night? Well I’ll tell ya!

Black Pearl – Shrugged off Pistol Robinson in 1.5 seconds! If you don’t know, Pistol had a sick night of ‘this-is-how-you-get-it-done’ riding, until he ran into this multi-ton bucking machine. This bull likes to buck from the start and is notorious for ending rounds instantly for riders.

Hee Bee Gee Bee – Talk about taking some lickings and still ticking! Who didn’t ride this bull for the event? You’d think he would have been tired out and not able to perform. Especially in the second round, he provided a lot of highlights (good and bad for riders).

Slim’s Ghost – This bull bucked off 5 straight cowboys before Willingham jumped on him. Willingham would have cruised through his 3rd round ride if it wasn’t for this tenacious beast. With no quit in him, Slim’s Ghost bucked, bucked and bucked again to get Willingham high in the air, with his hand just barely (or not at all, according to judges) still attached to the rope. Never seen such a close call.

Jaw Breaker – Uh, did anyone see the height that bull got in its round against Kasey Hayes? True to his name people. Watch out for this bull later on in the year.

A final reminder for anyone who thinks this sport looks easy: 8 seconds is a LONG time when you are on the back of an angry bull!
